Burkhart Network recently made donations to local non-profits that are using the Raccoon Tales series and accompanying plush raccoon animals in their daily activities.
Clarian North Hospital
Is using the raccoons in treasure boxes throughout the hospital for pediatric patients. Children get to pick a prize from the treasure box after a test or procedure. Books are in the playroom on the pediatric floor, too.
Raccoon plush toys are being included in new family baskets, as reading incentives, and giveaways at the annual picnic.
ReadUP is part of United Way of Central Indiana's comprehensive focus on early childhood and adolescent development. Children who cannot read are more likely to drop out of school. This program connects volunteer tutors with Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) 4th- and 5th-graders who need help reading. Volunteer tutors work with these students on vocabulary, fluency and comprehension to enhance their skill level one hour per week for the school year.
