Lorene McCormick Burkhart was born in 1934 on a farm in Southern Indiana near Vincennes. She grew up on that farm at the highest point of an area bordered by two Rivers the Wabash and the White. On the surface, growing up on that farm seemed serene and simple.
 
As is often the case, things may not have been as they appeared. In this book, Burkhart reveals family dynamics happening below the surface. Only through perspectives of her adulthood and her own experiences did she begin to understand and write about these experiences.
